very interesting and enlightening! i’m only 2 months into my 40s but i’ve been experiencing something similar, even had a blood test, too. My fitness has been slowly declining (and weight creeping up) over the past 2 years and i’ve not done anything different! I’ll have to dig deeper into the links you provided…

It’s worth reading up a bit. I was quite shocked to read that perimenopause can start around 37 years. Happy birthday too! I hope you managed a celebration of sorts!

Cheers! I baked a cake for myself and it was very nice…
Just read the article by Amanda Thebe but it’s not as informative for me as the symptoms don’t really overlap. But this is possibly just down to women’s research not being done as thoroughly as other areas (i’ve read Invisible Women and this is a typical case).

I’m also 44 and experienced my first missed period last month – now that was a panic attack before I read up and realised, oh yeah, that’s one of those things that happens to women in their mid 40s! Got my first road bike last year so hopefully my body will let me crack on with enjoying my rides

Thanks — this is really helpful and struck many chords. I am quite active, cycling, a bit of running and swimming (pre Covid) but also seemed to be losing fitness if anything, and definite middle-aged (and middle) spread. And awful sleep. I’m 48 so was more obviously perimenopause, and my mother had menopause at this age. I really struggle to cut down on carbs — not too mad for sugar but love bread and bread products, and struggle to eat differently to my daughter so there is quite a bit of white rice and lots of pasta. But this is great motivation to be more disciplined about it.

I’m so glad you found it helpful. Good luck. I think it’s important to remember that you are only experimenting with reducing carbs, absolutely not trying to give them up. I’ve found it really helpful…but today has been a barbeque day so lots of white bread and I’m just eating toasted marshmallow!

[…] to creep its way up to 12 stone. Maybe this is due to having children. Maybe it’s due to reaching my 40s. Maybe it doesn’t matter […]
