Stonehaven Cycling Club

Club Name:

Stonehaven Cycling Club

Where are you based?

Stonehaven, Scotland.

Cycling Disciplines:

Our club caters for all levels of cyclists in road, cyclo-dross and mountain biking

What is your club ethos?

The ethos of the club is Cycling for All. We aim to provide a friendly, fun club for all riders of all disciplines and abilities.

What is the best thing about your club?

How quickly the club has grown to one of the biggest cycling clubs in the North East of Scotland. We have an almost a 70:30 split of male and female members which is something we are also very proud of.

What club rides do you run?

During the cycle season, we run weekly rides for all abilities.

On a Wednesday evenings we often have approximately 60 cyclists heading off to complete a variety of routes.

We also organise weekly weekend cycles.

At the start and end of each season we hold social cycles with the obligatory cake and coffee stops.

Rides are split by speeds and abilities with a no-drop policy. All new members are welcomed in and assigned to a group to provide them support.

Do you wait for dropped riders / mechanicals on some or all of your rides?

In our slower groups, the strong ethos is that no-one is left behind and we have regular stops to ensure everyone is together and happy. In the more advanced groups, this depends on the group itself but we all look out for each other!

What is the minimum standard you would expect from new club riders?

We aim to hold beginner rides early in the season and these are supported by our club members. We take turns to take out the beginners to allow them to gain confidence on the road.

In addition, we have several female club members who are trained Breeze Leaders. Breeze rides can allow new riders to be introduced to group riding, as this can be daunting at first. This then feeds into the club when riders feel ready.

For club rides, we would expect the cyclist to be bike aware and have basic maintenance knowledge. We have offered bike maintenance classes over the years to all our members which has had a great uptake.

What do you expect riders to bring on club runs?

Helmet, repair kit, money for cake and coffee (especially on our organised social rides), phones and high viz for the North East haar!!!

Are bikes other than road bikes acceptable on any rides?

We have had people come on our rides on e bikes/hybrid and mountain bikes which have been supported.

Aspects of cycling the club is involved in:

Social runs

Chaingang sessions

Coached sessions for adults

Organising races

Competing in races

Organising sportives

Taking part in sportives

Do you run club social events?

Yes we do. Prior to lockdown we held a quiz in the local bowling club which was open to all members, their friends and families. We donated the proceeds of this to our annually dedicated local charity. We also look to organise social cycles start, mid and end of season  (this has been restricted in 2020 due to COVID 19). Our club participate and also help to run the annual beer festival and associated sportive which is held in June each year.

Number of members (roughly):

Current membership is 159, there are 43 female members and 116 male members

Current percentage of female members:

Do you have a women’s development officer?

We don’t have a dedicated women’s development officer however we have four women on the committee.

Please give details of any projects you have or are running to support and encourage women.

Some of our female club members are Breeze Leaders and are dedicated in supporting woman getting out on their bikes.

Do you also have a children’s / youth section / Go Ride club?

There is a dedicated cycle group in Stonehaven which supports the youths and we have an active role in supporting this.

Do you offer opportunities for members to train as coaches, ride leaders, etc?

Yes we do. For the competitive and more experienced members, we have weekly group rides and some members frequently participate in sportives, audax and even UCI road races in Europe.

Any other information you would like to share:

We also organise mountain and off-road cycling rides.

The club organise turbo sessions during the winter months in the local community centre which allows the members to keep up their fitness levels. Even if someone does not have a turbo, we can usually source one for them to borrow.

We have been looking into organising Zwift virtual rides during the lockdown and ongoing social distancing restrictions.
